Why telling bullying victims to 'just fight back' doesn't work | WTVR ...

Editor?s note: Carrie Goldman is the author of Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher, and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear.

(CNN) ? Fall is upon us, and that means the school year is in full swing. Along with the stress of homework assignments and extracurricular activities, unfortunately some students bear an additional burden ? bullying. October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, pushing the issue to the forefront of the nation?s consciousness.

Educators and legislators are under pressure to prevent bullying, and many schools are implementing programs such as A Classroom of Difference, Steps to Respect and Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports that teach empathy, interpersonal skills and respect for those who don?t fit into the mainstream.

But not everyone agrees with this approach to managing bullying. There are vocal groups of naysayers who believe that focusing on social emotional skills training and urging students to be accepting of those who are different is leading to the weakening of America. They argue that bullying is really a form of socialization, asserting that kids who do not conform to society?s expectations are bringing on their own troubles.

And when a child does end up being bullied, this same group of people advises that the victims should just fight back.

For example, the following comment on a recent CNN.com article about gender neutral toys (for which I shared my child?s bullying experiences): ?Communities demand relative conformity, it is what makes them communal. Nonconformity, therefore, naturally results in exclusion. Children are callous in this respect, and if parents wish to ensure their children find acceptance, then find them a suitable community. As for self-expression, all humans are welcome to express themselves, but I reserve for myself the right to point and laugh, as should you too.?

Or consider this comment, which was made on a Fox News Magazine article about tips for ending bullying: ?I went to Catholic school. Got bullied. Told Dad. He said, knock him in the mouth. He will leave you alone. Next day I got bullied. Punched Billy in the mouth. End of story. We are best friends today and I haven?t been bullied since. Write letters, document facts? Make school aware? Whaaaat? How political we have been? What a shame. One slap can change things for sure!?

This type of ?superior force? advice shows a lack of appreciation for the complexities of the bully-victim dynamics of today?s world, where bullying often takes place in new arenas, such as on the Internet. Sure, if a victim fights back and flattens his bully, the bully tends to back off. But what if the bullies are hiding behind computer screens? What if the target is physically incapable of taking down the bully, which is more often the case?

The truth is that there are many bullying situations in which the victim cannot simply beat up the bully and end the problem. The very nature of bullying renders victims fearful, frozen and incapable of defending themselves. According to bullying researcher Dan Olweus, bullying is characterized by three factors: 1) It is repetitive (not a one-time event in the hall, but a regular ongoing problem). 2) It is unwanted (not two-way teasing where both parties are having fun, but instead a situation where someone is on the receiving end of taunts and aggression). 3) It takes place in the context of a power imbalance (a bigger kid against a smaller kid, or multiple kids against a single kid, or a kid with more social capital against a kid with less social capital).

When multiple kids are targeting one child, the situation can feel completely overwhelming. Felicia Garcia, a 15-year-old New York student, threw herself in front of a train in October, allegedly after being taunted by multiple football players at her high school. How would it have helped her to simply punch one of them? It would not have done anything, except possibly put her at risk for physical harm.

And earlier in October, Canadian teen Amanda Todd committed suicide after making a YouTube video detailing her history of being bullied mercilessly, online and in person. Both girls were allegedly the victims of sexually explicit bullying, which is not something easily combated by punching the bully in the face.

Kids who are already suffering from psychological conditions such as panic attacks or depression are particularly vulnerable to the negative emotional effects of bullying, Barbara Coloroso, who speaks internationally on bullying, told me: ?As severe bullying continues, an element of terror is created. The bullied child is rendered so powerless that she is unlikely to fight back and she will not even tell someone that she needs help. The bully, who can act without fear of retaliation, counts on bystanders to either join in or at least do nothing to stop it.?

In trying to get the bullying to stop, targets may avoid the location where the bullying is happening. They might change the way they dress or act in order to minimize the bullying, but then they suffer pangs for not being true to who they are. Kids who are afraid to be themselves can become anxious and depressed.

When a parent or a teacher tells a child who is being bullied to stop tattling and fight back, it can make the situation worse. Those kids who are unable to fight back may end up feeling blamed for the bullying. Their already fragile self-esteem is further weakened, as they wonder, ?What is wrong with me? Why can?t I make this stop??

Even if a child does succeed in hitting back (whether through physical intimidation or verbal taunts or cyberbullying), what message does this send? It teaches kids to out-bully each other, rather than to focus on restoration and restitution.

As a result, the antisocial behaviors simply continue into adulthood, where they play out in a different arena. In Massachusetts, lawmakers are working to make workplace bullying illegal. Research from the Workplace Bullying Institute estimates that as many as a third of employees endure bullying in the workplace. This bullying can take the form of sabotage and undermining, as well as the more obvious yelling and screaming.

The costs to society extend beyond workplace bullying, because chronic bullies are also more likely to end up in prisons, and our already taxed budget will end up paying for their care, according to Michele Borba, author of several parenting books, including Building Moral Intelligence.

?A repeat bully by age 8 has a one-in-four chance of having a criminal record by age 26,? Borba said.

It is a lot easier to inculcate kindness and acceptable social behavior into an 8-year-old than an 18-year-old, and the earlier our schools implement social emotional skills building and bullying prevention, the better.

The focus of bullying intervention needs to shift. Instead of teaching the victims to hit back harder, let?s teach the bullies not to hit in the first place.

'Tattoo Nightmares': Man's Drunk Friend Gave Him A Huge Tribal Tattoo (VIDEO)

Marshall was a cautionary tale about getting tattoos while drunk. He came into the shop on "Tattoo Nightmares" with a huge tribal tat on his forearm that he'd had now for about six years. He said it was the result of a night out partying with his friend Kara.

A nearby tattoo shop was running a special. If you agree to be blindfolded, your tattoo is free. Drunk and encouraged by his friend, Marshall was on board.

"I?m sitting there blindfolded and Kara?s being real quiet, which is odd, ?cuz normally she?s a loud drunk," he said. When they pulled the blindfold off, Kara revealed that it was her who had done his tattoo. So not only did he not have a professional tattoo artist inking him, but it was someone who was very drunk.

Jasmine Rodriguez said this large black tattoo was the most difficult cover-up she'd ever done, but she managed to transform his tribal ink into an image of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Several fans online were saying they'd love to get the shop's help with their own "Tattoo Nightmares," and it looks like Spike wants to help them do just that by applying for the show and sharing their own stories. Keep watching "Tattoo Nightmares" on Tuesdays at 11 p.m. ET on Spike.

TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.

James Mangold Talks The Wolverine

wolverine-hugh-jackman-magazine-scan-slice

A new image from The Wolverine has gone online, and it shows off Wolverine?s bone claws.? For those unfamiliar with the character (or had the good sense to avoid X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Wolverine?s claws are part of his genetic mutation, but they?re made of bone.? They were coated in indestructible adamantium (along with his entire skeleton) as part of the Weapon X program, which took place before he joined the X-Men.? While The Wolverine will reportedly have nothing to do with the plot of Origins, it will still acknowledge the X-Men trilogy, and surprisingly, won?t be a prequel to them.

Hit the jump for more and to check out the image.? The film stars Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, and?Rila Fukushima.? The Wolverine opens July 26, 2013.

Via the latest issue of Empire:

wolverine-hugh-jackman-magazine-scan

Speaking to Empire, director James Mangold revealed that The Wolverine is a sequel to all of the ?X-Men movies:

?Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all,? reveals Mangold. ?Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there?s a tremendous sense of isolation for him.?

It?s a surprising revelation since A) We had seen set photos that took place in a Japanese POW camp, and B) the comic the film is based on Chris Claremont and Frank Miller?s Wolverine, which takes place before the eponymous mutant joined the X-Men.? However, Mangold believes it?s important that the new movie exists beyond the current movie continuity:

?That?s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline,? says Mangold. ?I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that?s such an interesting part of Logan?s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie.?

I?m fascinated by what Mangold has in store for the character.? As for the bone claws, presumably this is one of the World War II scenes unless Logan is going to have his adamantium ripped out like he did in X-Men #25, and that seems unlikely.

Here?s the official synopsis for The Wolverine:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, THE WOLVERINE finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

Economist Who Advises Mitt Romney: 'Rich Are Taxed Enough'

"The rich are taxed enough," argued Columbia Business School Dean Glenn Hubbard.

The man who The New York Times called Mitt Romney's "go-to economist" and who is considered a leading candidate to be treasury secretary in a Republican administration made his case at a debate in New York.

"Raising tax rates on the rich is both counter-productive and unnecessary to fund the government we want," said Hubbard.

While steering clear of specifics, Hubbard told the audience at the Intelligence Squared Debate that "higher tax rates won't necessarily produce enhancements in revenue."

"We can and should achieve fairness and growth without taxing the rich more than they are today," he said.

Hubbard's somewhat dry tone was balanced by the passion of one of his debate opponents, former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich. Speaking against the motion "the rich are taxed enough," Reich argued called the idea "absurd."

"The rich have done extraordinarily well but the rest haven't," said Reich to audience applause. "The percentage of total U.S. income of the top 1 percent has doubled in the past 30 years. Given where we are now, we shouldn't even have this debate."

Hubbard opposed raising tax rates for the rich but added, "We need a progressive tax system."

"The wealthy should pay a disproportionate share of taxes," he said.

Hubbard and his debate team colleague, Arthur Laffer, spoke out for tax reform that would lower rates but also broaden the tax base.

"We need to think about growth and fairness. Tax rates should not rise," said Hubbard.

The United States already has one of the most progressive tax systems in the world, he argued. Comparing the U.S. economy to a tall building, Hubbard said the "lower floors are flooded" while the people in the penthouse are doing well -but "the elevator is broken."

If the tax base were broadened with lower rates and tax reform, opportunity would be expanded and "we would get more revenues" to pay for the government," he said.

Go Inspire Go...: Boy, 6 with Brain Cancer Brings Halloween to Sick ...

Eight-year-old Nico Castro from San Bruno, Calif.,
isn't letting his battle with brain cancer affect his spirit of giving this
Halloween. After his doctor gave him the green light to trick-or-treating thanks
to a break in his chemotherapy, he was jumping for jack-o'-lanterns, what a
treat! But here's where it gets tricky.

?Even though he's worse off then some of these other kids in the hospital, he's worried about them and oh they can't go trick-or-treating and oh they can't get candy,? said Nico's mother, Marlene Castro in a proud, but somber voice.

This worried little Halloween hero with a big heart asked his parents if they could buy costumes and treats for the kids in the cancer ward. "I was sad they wouldn't have candy," Nico explained. Marlene and her husband Raul Castro were moved by his thoughtfulness, however, it would be impossible to buy costumes and goodies for the more than 50 sick kids in the hospital. The family took a big financial hit after Nico's diagnosis.

Nico knows what it feels like to have to sit on the sidelines during the holidays. Last November, in stead of celebrating, he was in the hospital, too ill to take part in the festivities. He was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, cancer of the cerebellum. But during this scary time, all he could think about was if he would be healthy enough to celebrate his favorite holiday -- Halloween.

So in true superhero fashion, they took action and started a costume drive. "We were so surprised from the support outside of our community. The community really came together packages of costumes are coming from Pennsylvania, Illinois and Texas," Raul said. ?The costumes, the little trinkets that the kids in the beds are getting. Just an instant and it changes their demeanor and whole attitude about being sick.?

Beware: grab a Kleenex before watching this Halloween hero's story:

It's amazing to see how the community comes together when they're given a healthy dose of inspiration. After meeting Nico, I quickly realized his superhero power is inspiring people to expand their minds, be more compassionate and to open their hearts.

After an initial call with Nico's mother to set up this shoot, I couldn't help but pitch in. I made some calls to local businesses and told them about Nico's story. Sparky's Balloons in San Francisco donated the festive bouquet of balloons and a goodie bag filled with spooky toys and trinkets. My good friend Jessica Chang reached out to Daydreams and Nightmares, a local costume shop in Modesto, Calif., that donated 20 costumes. Green Apple Books in San Francisco donated a $25 gift card after hearing that Nico likes to read. Our Facebook friend, Amanda Rivas from San Jose, Calif., saw our FB shout out, donated 15 costumes and came a long to our shoot to surprise Nico. Thanks Rivas family!

Since my nonprofit Go Inspire Go brings you stories of everyday heroes, leverages social media to build community and ultimately inspire action, we had a few tricks up our sleeves -- so I reached out to super mom Amy Pankratz, founder of Wonder Capes in Sioux Falls, S.D. and BAM, she quickly crafted a custom Batman cape for Nico and two other capes for his brother, 11, and sister, 8. I told her that Nico likes Batman because the mask covers his bald head. She told me that made her sad, so she made an extra trip to the fabric store and crafted a mask too.

The donations and kind acts continue to pour in. My friends asked if we could go to the hospital on Halloween to hand out goodies to the kids on Halloween. The community has pitch in to offset some of the medical costs. More than $1,200 has trickled in.

It is hard to sit back and not take action after meeting this inspiring family who embody the real meaning of family, generosity and being present. "If you would have asked me a year ago that my son would be battling brain cancer and I would be going to the hospital daily, I would have never believed it," Marlene explained. "Ironically, every year we would give donations to St. Jude's Hospital for sick children."

It's easy to see where Nico got his kindness, compassion and giving spirit. When you hear of Nico's story, you can't help but reflect on your own life. As a kid, I thought Halloween was about ghosts, goblins, candy and costumes. But as I get older, I realize that at its core, this hallowed holiday is more about giving, not just with candy, but sharing and revering in these little moments with each other.

We grew up on welfare, so buying a cheap $5 costume was expensive to us. I have vivid memories of autumn. I can smell the morning dew on the vibrant leaves that crinkled under my little feet -- orange, yellow, brown. My brothers and I were excited for my auntie Hong to get off work and take us costume shopping at the local Thrifty's and Newberry. I remember playing with the flash lights, Halloween Pez dispensers and toys in the store isles that I would have to put back because we didn't have the money to buy them. Still, we were happy because each of us left with a costume.

I never told Auntie Hong how this little gesture and the inexpensive costumes meant the world to us. That's all we cared about. Experiences and connections and simple acts of generosity are what this holiday is truly about. Ironically, Auntie Hong passed away of breast cancer at age 47. I didn't realize it at the time, but Auntie Hong's kind seasonal act had a profound impact on how I see the world today. Her kindness was passed along for many holidays to come. My parents didn't understand or celebrate Halloween or many other holidays, so I made a concerted effort to make holidays a big deal for my younger cousins and now for my nephew and niece. It's inspired me to be kinder to others, give what I can, and to be present and live every day with the attitude of gratitude all year round. It's interesting how the little moments in life come full circle. Now that I have a voice and a platform, I'm using it to multiply the deeds of superheroes like Nico.

Nico has undergone extensive surgery to remove his brain tumor, which was about four-and-a-half inches big. Doctors were able to remove most of the tumor from his cerebellum, but couldn't take out the rest of it because it was attached to his brain stem. Meanwhile, doctors believe the prognosis is good, but worry about how the treatment will affect Nico's standard of living in the long run.

This one's for you Auntie Hong. Nico, my Halloween hero, thank you for your thoughtfulness and allowing me to say thank you to my Auntie by telling your story!

Please don't sit out this holiday. Take action.

Take Action:

Update: Nico has collected 85 NEW costumes & 60 USED costumes!

'Days Of Our Lives' Gay Characters Will And Sonny Will Have Sex

Things between gay "Days of our Lives" characters Will and Sonny are about to heat up.

Fans of the show will be thrilled to learn that the pair will finally have sex in an upcoming episode, set to air Nov. 14, according to TV Guide. "Days of our Lives" actor Freddie Smith, who plays Sonny, says the delay was intentional and that cast and crew intended to build the relationship between the two characters before the much-anticipated scene.

"It's allowed the audience to get to know our characters and to get to a place where they are really rooting for them to get together," Smith said. "This isn't a story about two gay guys. It's about two human beings who truly love each other."

Gay characters have been featured on soap operas for some time, and Smith doesn't expect much of a backlash when the scene airs. "I don't expect anyone will think the sex scene is controversial," he said. "Hopefully, we're past that."

As fans of the show can attest, complicating matters in the budding relationship between Sonny and Will is Sonny's father, Lucas -- a particularly critical plot point, actor Chandler Massey points out.

"I know a lot of dads who are like Lucas," Massey, who plays Will, notes. "They're not homophobic per se, or against gay marriage, but they're uncomfortable being in close contact with anything gay, especially when it involves their son. It's all okay in theory but they don't want to deal with the reality."

It's actually the second time Smith has played gay. Previously, he joined the cast of "90210" for a five-episode arc as Marco Salazar, another gay character.

Insisting that sexual orientation is merely "part of the character," Smith has previously said he had no fears about returning to a gay role. "Sexual orientation is such a small part of the complex person you are," he said. "We get too hung up about this in America.?

Features Of Reputation Management | Marijuana for MRSA

Online reputation of a website is what really matters today, as it helps in creating a credibility and authenticity of the brand in the minds of people. The reputation management service team has to highlight the positive aspects when they know that they cannot correct the negative sides. If you have a good name in the market then you will be able to attract a lot of targeted customers to your company. ORM is done as the need for influencing viewer perception. Sustaining a higher profile blog of one?s website may be a good notion.

Keep in mind that online reputation management can?t be embraced by an automated tool or software. is justified and not against business ethics. But many times, it takes just few words to play with a brand?s reputation. Allow a reputation management team to do an analysis of your online presence and suggest modifications, along with a list of dos and don?ts. The power of search engine optimization could be leveraged to counteract negative publicity.

When a business has a bad reputation in the market, its existing and prospective clients will soon drift away. You should incorporate this into your Internet marketing strategy today by doing the things that I will suggest in this article. As you work through the choices, you want to learn about the different ways that this type of organization can help you achieve your goals. Here are three of the things an expert in the field will take into consideration as they analyze your current situation and provide solutions for positioning you in a more positive light. However I am slow to buy into anything that has the potential to impact the world for generations to come unless I can be sure the culture is based on a solid foundation of real transparency, respect, and trust.

You?ve responded to the comments quickly and thoughtfully, but they?re still affecting your company?s reputation because they have high search engine rankings. You work hard to establish a positive brand image and trusted reputation among your customers. Once your crisis or PR team is in place, you can have them search the Internet for any bad press or reviews, and handle each one with grace. Hence, be prepared with tested and proven steps to remove negative blog posts using the expert tips offered by seasoned professionals. Issues involving promotion of your site as well as managing the reputation of your business can often present unique problems.

Managing your online reputation and protecting your brand?s image on the web is important as potentially damaging comments on these sites will have a negative impact on your bottom line. All this content from different sources can affect the popularity of a website. But are you covering all your bases? Thus reputation management online has a huge role in the protection and promotion of the online reputation of a business and for business hiring the right reputation defender company is therefore essential. In some cases, it can mean removal of negative comments.

This could be due to unsatisfied customer, competitor?s strategy to give bad fame to your business, or former employees who don?t have good feelings for your company. This assists in increasing popularity, awareness as well as removing the negative content from top search engine ranking positions. But this is not quite common, and it does not have to reach that stage. Simply imagine, if your very first web page of the website if filled with negative reviews and dissatisfied customers do you think any visitor will stay any longer to browse through your website? We are like minded, and are both great at trusting our intuition.

These questions are important in B2C and B2B marketing, because consumers are more likely to listen to each other than they are to react to brand advertising. These tools can be used to build a reputation for the company as well as its products and services. It is well known fact that reputation completely depends on what people do and say. They can even do this anonymously and you?ll never know who is trying to ruin your reputation. It is seen that when a business does not have a reputation in the search engines, the consumers fail to trust them.

Unfavorable posts, negative feedback in blogs, awful testimonials in famous forums, outlandish fraud accusations, and product reviews from fictitious users could possibly put a restaurant out of business. Reputation management helps a seller to get feedback from his customers about their satisfaction with the product. Internet has gained the distinction of becoming the most preferred platform for finding information and the same is provided at lightening speed. Internet gives you a chance to prosper your business and approach the millions of people online to take interest in your business offerings, but internet marketing has its dark sides too. If you are not doing any or all of these things, how has that been working out for you?

People will avoid visiting the site because they are aware of the false claims. Talking about the ways to remove negative blog posts, you should never ignore the fact that the longer they stay in sites like these, they are going to be seen and read by website visitors. Henceforth, they assist businesses to keep up the status. In these days of mass online interaction, trying to assess the volume of information and opinion flying around the ether is as easy as counting the particles of dust in a beam of light. Press releases and testimonials are effective in overshadowing negative posts too.

Online reputation management service means everything in the world of businesses. They will read the positive press and form their opinions.

Four Border Collies and Me: JUST plain FUN

I love teaming up with my dogs.? I enjoy competition, but not nearly as much as just working with them.? Competition is too CONTROLLED for me.? I'd much rather be loading, unloading, moving stock, etc. on a ranch.? One thing that is a pet peeve with me is that dogs (for the most part) aren't allowed to defend themselves when challenged in USBCHA.? I don't? mean "cheap shots,"....I mean in self defense.? If stock drops a head at my dog on a ranch, I expect that dog to take a nip to show them who is in charge.? I don't like a "pansy" dog...never have.
Or, I'd much rather be out in the desert enjoying the "vastness," the "quiet" and just plain enjoying watching my dogs work.? Even 'just hiking' would take precedence over trailing.? So, I guess?I will never be a trial contender.? I don't trial enough to even be a finals contender.? But, that's okay.? I love rooting on my friends that get there.? I enjoy helping out when I can.? And, most of all I ENJOY my dogs.? Isn't that what it is all about?
I'm lucky that I have a ranch just 15 min. away from me with sheep, sometimes cows, and goats.? My dogs love it.? I love it.? It gives them the exercise they need and me, too. :0)? Now, if?I had a horse, I think life would be rather "complete."
Just a few pics from today working at Task Farms.?

YOKO AKA Goat Girl

Yoko has everything under control.? Yo loves a good game.

Go Goat Girl!? You tell them :0)

Yoko is all about COWS.? Even on the other side of the fence :0)

Here she shows her half brother to stand quietly

'Django Unchained' Gets Appropriately Badass International Poster

Based on the violent international trailer we saw for "Django Unchained" yesterday and the movie's new international poster, we can pretty much assume that this movie is going to end with an epic showdown where Jamie Foxx's Django and Christoph Waltz's Dr. King Schultz face off against Leonardo DiCaprio's Calvin Candie. Apple unveils long-rumored iPad Mini starting at $329

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Apple Inc.'s pencil-thin, smaller iPad will cost much more than its competitors, signaling that the company isn't going to get into a mini-tablet price war.

The company unveiled the iPad Mini on Tuesday, with a screen about two-thirds the size of the full model, and half the weight. Customers can begin ordering the new model on Friday. In a surprise, Apple also revamped its flagship, full-sized iPad just six months after the launch of the latest model.

Apple's late founder Steve Jobs once ridiculed a small tablet from a competitor as a "tweener" that was too big and too small to compete with either smartphones or tablets. Now Apple's own Mini enters a growing small-tablet market dominated by Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire.

Apple is charging $329 and up for the Mini - a price that fits into the Apple product lineup between the latest iPod Touch ($299) and the iPad 2 ($399). Company watchers had been expecting Apple to price the iPad Mini at $250 to $300 to compete with the Kindle Fire, which starts at $159. Barnes & Noble Inc.'s Nook HD and Google Inc.'s Nexus 7 both start at $199.

"Apple had an opportunity to step on the throat of Amazon and Google, yet decided to rely on its brand and focus on (profit) margin," said Bill Kreher, an analyst with brokerage Edward Jones.

Apple shares fell $20.67, or 3.3 percent, to close at $613.36 after the price was announced. Shares of Barnes & Noble jumped 88 cents, or 6.1 percent, to $15.32. Shares of Amazon rose 53 cents, or 0.2 percent, to $234.31.

Apple has sold more than 100 million iPads since their debut in April 2010. Analysts expect Apple to sell 5 million to 10 million iPad Minis before the year is out.

Apple starts taking orders for the new model on Friday. The iPad Mini will be competing for the attention of gadget shoppers with the release that same day of computers and tablets running Windows 8, Microsoft's new operating system.

Wi-Fi-only models will ship on Nov. 2. Later, the company will add models capable of accessing cellular, LTE data networks.

The screen of the iPad Mini is 7.9 inches on the diagonal, making it larger than the 7-inch screens of the competitors. It also sports two cameras, on the front and on the back, which the competitors don't.

The iPad Mini is as thin as a pencil and weighs 0.68 pounds, half as much as the full-size iPad with its 9.7-inch screen.

The screen resolution is 1024 by 768 pixels, the same as the iPad 2 and a quarter of the resolution of the flagship iPad, which starts at $499.

The new model has better apps and is easier to use than competitors such as Google's Nexus, said Avi Greengart, a consumer electronics analyst with Current Analysis.

"This really is not in the same category as some of the other 7-inch tablets," he said. "And that's before you consider that it has a premium design - it's made of metal that's extremely lightweight."

Jobs attacked the whole idea of smaller tablets in his last appearance on a conference call with analysts in October 2010.

"The reason we wouldn't make a 7-inch tablet isn't because we don't want to hit a price point. It's because we don't think you can make a great tablet with a 7-inch screen," Jobs said. "The 7-inch tablets are tweeners, too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with an iPad."

Job's chief objection was that a smaller screen would make it hard to hit buttons on the screen with the fingers - never mind that Apple's iPhone, with an even smaller screen, was already a hit at the time.

Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue started working on changing Jobs' mind. In an email sent to other Apple managers in January 2011, Cue said the CEO had started warming to the idea of a smaller tablet. The email surfaced as part of Apple's patent trial against Samsung Electronics Co. this year. Jobs died last October.

Company watchers have been expecting the iPad Mini for a year and most of the details, except the price, had leaked out.

Apple also said it's upgrading its full-size iPad, doubling the speed of the processor. Previously, the company has updated the iPad once a year.

The fourth-generation iPad will have a better camera and work on more LTE wireless data networks around the world. Apple is also replacing the 30-pin dock connector with the new, smaller Lightning connector introduced with the iPhone 5 a month ago.

The price of the new full-size model stays the same as the previous version, starting at $499 for a Wi-Fi-only version with 16 gigabytes of memory.

Apple also introduced a 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop with a Retina display sporting four times the resolution of the older model.

The new model, which follows a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display introduced in June, goes on sale Tuesday for $1,699.

The old MacBook Pro will still be sold, starting at $1,199.

The new model dispenses with an optical disc drive and a traditional hard drive. Instead, it uses solid-state flash memory. This makes it 20 percent thinner and at 3.75 pounds, nearly a pound lighter than the previous model.

Apple also eliminated the optical drive from its new iMac desktop computer, helping slim the edges down to 5 millimeters, one-fifth the thickness of the old model. That makes the edges thinner than most stand-alone computer monitors. It bulges in middle of the back, however.

An iMac model with a 21.5-inch screen will start shipping in November for $1,299 and up. A 27-inch version will start at $1,799.

Keymonk is a Super Fast and Accurate Android Keyboard, Is Like Swype with Two Fingers

Keymonk is a Super Fast and Accurate Android Keyboard, Is Like Swype with Two FingersKeymonk is a Super Fast and Accurate Android Keyboard, Is Like Swype with Two Fingers Android: Keymonk is a new Android keyboard replacement that takes the idea of swiping your fingers across letters to input text up a notch. Turn your phone sideways and use both thumbs to input text, or put it in portrait mode and use one?either way it's fast, accurate, and best of all, free.

We love Swype, the Android keyboard that pioneered the idea of drawing your words instead of tapping them, and even though it recently updated, it's not for everyone. If your don't like the idea of drawing your words, Keymonk won't appeal to you, but if you miss being able to use your thumbs, Keymonk combines the best of both worlds: fast landscape input with your thumbs, and fast portrait input with one or two fingers.

You can see how the app works in the video above. The developers say that the app was designed for speed, and it showed when we tested the app. Overall, it felt faster at recognizing the words I typed, even if some of them were wrong, and even though using my thumbs in landscape mode felt awkward at first, eventually I stopped whacking my thumbs into one another. Still, it took some getting used to.

Keymonk is free and available now at Google Play. There is a $4 "full version" available that allows you to add custom words to the dictionary, hide the suggestions list if you're just that accurate, unlocks the settings screen, and lets you auto-add spaces after punctuation marks so you don't have to. Grab the free version if you're interested in giving it a shot.

Apple 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro hands-on!

Apple 13inch Retina MacBook Pro handson!

Apple just introduced its second Retina display MacBook: the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which starts at $1,699 and is shipping today. Just months after the 15-incher was gifted with a display that packs more pixels than your existing HDTV, the 13-inch sibling is receiving similar treatment. Unveiled today in San Jose alongside the iPad mini, the intensely dense 13-inch MBP is true to the rumors -- there's a 2,560 x 1,600 panel, a pair of Thunderbolt ports, a full-size HDMI socket and a MagSafe 2 power connector. Unfortunately, those yearning for a Retina-equipped MacBook Air won't find their dreams fulfilled just yet, but you can bet that holdouts will most certainly give this guy a look.

For starters, it's wildly thin. No, not manilla envelope thin, but thin enough to slip into most briefcases and backpacks without the consumer even noticing. Outside of that, it's mostly a shrunken version of the 15-incher let loose over the summer. The unibody design is as tight as ever, with the fit and finish continuing to impress. In my estimation, this is Apple's most deliberate move yet to differentiate the 13-inch MacBook Pro from the 13-inch MacBook Air. On one hand, power users longing for a highly portable laptop can rejoice; on the other, this could be seen as reason for Apple to restrict the use of Retina displays to its Pro range for the foreseeable future.

Compared to the 1,280 x 800 resolution of the non-Retina 13-inch MBP, the new display is particularly stunning. Text has never looked more crisp, and colors are stupendously vibrant. Of course, apps, websites and graphics that haven't been optimized for Retina still look like utter rubbish, and as more Apple machines transition to these panels, the outcry is going to get even louder. But, hopefully, it'll light a fire under developers to get with the program.

This year's hottest IPO: A mortgage broker - The Term Sheet ...

Update: 3:30 PM, 10/24

I guess I called the top. On Wednesday, Nationstar lost out to rival Ocwen in its bid to take over servicing the mortgage portfolio of GM's former finance arm ResCap. In late afternoon, shares of Nationstar had tumbled 10% to $31. That makes Nationstar still one of the best performing IPO of the year. But no longer the best. I still think Nationstar will benefit from paralysis in Washington to come up with a permanent fix for Fannie and Freddie. But it appears its shares had priced in rapid growth of its mortgage servicing portfolio, which may not be sustainable. Anyway, here's my story from this morning? .? .? .? .? ?

FORTUNE -- Perhaps the IPO market's biggest surprise this year is not what flopped (Facebook), but its biggest winner - a former subprime mortgage broker.

Shares of Nationstar Mortgage (NSM), at a recent $34.86, are up 149% since going public in March, making it the best performing IPO of the year, according to IPO-specialist Renaissance Capital. The performance is a victory for private equity and hedge fund firm Fortress, which saved Nationstar during the financial crisis rather than let it go under. It now owns 80%.

In part, Nationstar's performance is another sign that the mortgage business is back. Last month, the Federal Reserve said it would buy up mortgage bonds in an effort to drive down rates and spur home lending. It has. Even more so, though, the Fed's actions have increased the spread between what it costs to fund a mortgage and what lenders can charge, significantly fattening profits for banks and a handful of upstarts, like Nationstar, who are now charging in and trying to redefine the mortgage market.

MORE: The next generation of pre-IPO financing

Nationstar, which has recruited a number of former Fannie Mae executives, is also cashing in on another trend. Banks are jettisoning their mortgage servicing units. Collecting borrowers payments can be a good business in good times, but got messy after the housing bust. What's more, new capital requirements would make the business less profitable for big banks.

Nationstar has picked up units on the cheap. It also benefited from a somewhat secretive deal with Fannie Mae, which netted Nationstar a large chunk of the giant, government-controlled mortgage insurer's servicing work. Nationstar services nearly $200 billion in mortgage loans, about double a year ago.

And that business may be about to grow again. The company is one of the main bidders in an auction this week for the right to service the mortgage portfolio of ResCap, the former financing arm of General Motors. If Nationstar wins, it would more than double its loan servicing portfolio again.

Fortress created Nationstar in the early 2000s by cobbling together subprime mortgage brokers. After the financial crisis, many mortgage lenders went out of business. Fortress doubled down. Nationstar got out of the business of making loans, and into the business of servicing them. More recently, Nationstar has begun making new loans, again, but this time only ones to prime borrowers. The moves have clearly paid off.

But some analysts think the stock has risen too high. Bose George, an analyst at Keefe Bruyette and Woods, recently downgraded the stock to a neutral. Nationstar, like other servicers, benefits from an unusual financing arrangement with a REIT also owned by Fortress. So far the IRS has approved the tax treatment of those deals. Some borrowers have picketed Fortress' offices complaining about Nationstar's foreclosure practices. But a review from Fannie Mae gave Nationstar high grades.

MORE: Housing is indeed heading higher

More importantly, the Bernanke fueled mortgage gravy train is only likely to last for so long. Profits are likely to narrows. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently said his bank is considering cutting its prices. That could be a problem for Nationstar. Last quarter, all of the company's profits came from lending. It's servicing business lost money, but is expected to rebound.

A bigger issue could be that we still don't know what the mortgage business will be in a few years. Regulators and politicians have talked about the need to get rid of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, or at least fully privatize them. That would surely shake up the market.

But, yet, four years after the financial crisis, nothing has happened. Meanwhile, new players like Nationstar and PennyMac and a number of mortgage REITs are trying to fill the void, and reshape the mortgage market in a way that best suits their bottom lines. And the longer Congress does nothing, the more likely they will be able to do just that.

So in the end Nationstar may be the ultimate investment play on Washington gridlock. Not a bad bet.

Timing is everything: Hormone use may reduce or increase Alzheimer's disease risk in women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? A new study suggests that women who begin taking hormone therapy within five years of menopause may reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The research is published in the October 24, 2012, online issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"This has been an area of debate because observational studies have shown a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease with hormone therapy use, while a randomized controlled trial showed an increased risk. Our results suggest that there may be a critical window near menopause where hormone therapy may possibly be beneficial," said study author Peter P. Zandi, PhD, with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. "On the other hand, if started later in life, hormone therapy could be associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease."

For the study, researchers followed 1,768 women ages 65 and older for 11 years. The women provided a history of their hormone therapy use and the date at which menopause began. A total of 1,105 women had used hormone therapy, consisting of estrogen alone or in combination with a progestin. During the study, 176 women developed Alzheimer's disease dementia, including 87 of the 1,105 women who had taken hormone therapy compared to 89 of the 663 others.

The study found that women who began hormone therapy within five years of menopause had a 30-percent lower risk of Alzheimer's dementia than those who had not used hormone therapy. The risk was unchanged among other hormone users who had begun treatment more than five years after menopause, but a higher risk of dementia was observed among women who had started a combined therapy of estrogen and progestin when they were at least 65 years old.

"While this well-designed study supports the possibility that short-term hormone use may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease, more research is needed before we can make new clinical recommendations for women and their use of hormone therapy," said Victor Henderson, MD, MS, with Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, who wrote an accompanying editorial.

The study was supported by the National Institute on Aging.

The beauty of bedtime ? The Full Moxie:: Celebrity, Entertainment ...

I am blessed with a child who sleeps very well through the night. Once he goes to bed, barring a need to use the restroom, he?s there for the night. No jack-in-the-box bedtimes here. A rarity with a young child, so I hear.

Though, at times, I?d like to think perhaps we ?earned this?, as he didn?t sleep through the night well until nearly turning one, and the routine leading up to a successful bedtime has always been rather long.

When he was just a baby, it was diaper change, pajamas, brushing teeth, two books, followed by a final feeding, and then rocking and snuggling to Jack Johnson?s ?Good People? twice, then waiting for the drowsy eyes and slowly, ever so gently, laying him in his crib.

As we shifted away from diapers and final night feedings, the routine morphed into bath, pajamas, brush teeth, a story or two, and snuggling together in his big boy bed while Jack Johnson crooned away for a few songs.

And lately, in more recent days, the routine has become shower, pajamas, brush teeth, a story that he reads to us (slowly but surely), and snuggling in his bed while Super Mario, Legend of Zelda and Angry Birds themes, covered by an orchestra, waft through the air.

The bedtime routine has never been a speedy process ? in its entirety, it?s at least 40 minutes in length. Some evenings, it immediately follows an endless dinner of ?how many more bites?? ?until it?s gone? ?is that three?? ?it?s until it?s gone? ?you have five minutes to finish up? ?but I?m still hungry? ?then eat.? Some evenings, by the end of the bedtime routine, mom and dad are in fact quite tired and ready for some downtime of their own, and snuggle time is cut a little short. This usually comes with some protest, but in the end, it?s ?time for bed.?

Tonight however, as I lay next to my son, wrapped in his Angry Bird blanket, gently twisting his blue fuzzy blanket in his right hand while holding my hand with his left, I realized ? these days, these moments ? are numbered. And they are slipping away with each ?time for bed.?

He?s five now, and seemingly going on ten. He?s smart beyond his years, taller than most his age, but still allows his mama to kiss him on the forehead, and still wants her to snuggle him before he sleeps. This won?t last forever.

So, tonight, I stayed by his side until his breathing slowed and he started to snore lightly. Through three video game songs and probably 25 color rotations of his Ikea nightlight. Because if I only have a limited number of nights like this remaining, I?m going to appreciate them while they?re here.
