PST: How Americans are doing in Bundesliga

Yesterday, Mr. Davis updated us on the U.S. contingent in England. Today, let?s get caught up on what?s happening with the Yanks?das Bundesliga.

And ? lets? go ahead and count these down, five to one:

5. Timothy Chandler, RB, Nurnberg -?Yes,?Chandler?still counts here, though with his national team future still up in the air, we?ll keep him at number five. On Saturday, Chandler was one of Nurnberg?s better players, though the team disappointed with a 2-0 home loss to Stuttgart. After seven points in their first three games, Nurnberg has lost three matches in a row, though Chandler has hardly been the problem, registering a goal mid-week versus Hannover.

4. Jermaine Jones, DM, Schalke -?After missing his first match of the year mid-week,?Jones?was back in Huub Stevens? starting lineup, his ankle strong enough to reclaim his place along side Roman Neust?der in Schalke?s midfield. Jones lasted 73 minutes, picking up a yellow card shortly before coming off for Marco H?ger. Schalke drew at still undefeated Dusseldorf, 2-2.

3.?Danny Williams, DM, Hoffenheim?-?Williams gave a decent if uneven performance. The 23-year-old started deep in Hoffenheim?s 4-2-3-1, picking up a yellow card in his 90 minutes. Reports of paint a picture consistent with the rest of his team: solid defensively, but failing to provide much going forward.

2.?Fabian Johnson, LB, Hoffenheim -??Johnson continued his strong start to the German season, again proving dangerous down Hoffenheim?s left. The U.S.?s first choice left back was able to ask a couple of questions of Augsberg keeper Mohamed Amsif, though as was the case with his teammates, the chances ultimately came to naught. Hoffenheim played to a disappointing 0-0 at home to Germany?s last place team.

1. Steve Cherundolo, RB, Hannover - Dolo?s?team became the latest victim of a resurgent Hamburg, 2-0-1 since reacquiring Rafael van der Vaart. The former Spur was key to the game?s only goal, feeding?Artjoms Rudnevs on a 20th minute break that destined Hannover to their second loss in three. Cherundolo, however, had a good game, proving his typical, pesky self. The Hannover captain consistently broke up play down Hamburg?s left and proved problematic when able to break forward.

NASA's Curiosity rover finds ancient streambed on Mars, evidence of 'vigorous' water flow

NASA's Curiosity rover finds ancient streambed on Mars, evidence of 'vigorous' water flow

Curiosity may have spent a while limbering up for the mission ahead, but now it's found evidence of an ancient streambed on Mars that once had "vigorous" water flow. Photos of two rock outcroppings taken by the rover's mast camera between the north rim of Gale Crater and the foot of Mount Sharp reveal gravel embedded into a layer of conglomerate rock. The shape of the small stones indicate to NASA JPL scientists that they were previously moved, and their size (think from grains of sand to golf balls) are a telltale sign that water did the work instead of wind. Evidence of H2O on Mars has been spotted before, but this is the first direct look at the composition of riverbeds NASA has observed from above.

According to Curiosity science co-investigator William Dietrich, it's estimated that water flowed at the site anywhere from thousands to millions of years ago, moved at a clip of roughly 3 feet per second and was somewhere between ankle and hip deep. "A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," Mars Science Laboratory Project Scientist John Grotzinger said. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

Riding Shotgun in the Porsche 918 Spyder

Don't let the Porsche 918 Spyder's princely $845,000 price tag or its 795-hp output distract you. This plug-in hybrid's most telling number resides in its model name.

That 918 badge implies that this two-seat plug-in hybrid is a spiritual successor to the legendary 917, an incredibly successful race car whose later iterations boasted in excess of 1100 horsepower and a notorious appetite for victory. If that doesn't speak volumes to the 918's stratospheric ambitions, consider the other figures surrounding this low-slung sled: a N?rburgring lap time of 7:14 (20 seconds faster than its V-10-powered ancestor, the Carrera GT), an electric motor that produces a 442 lb-ft plateau of torque between 1000 and 9000 rpm, and an improbably high 78.4-mpg fuel-economy estimate that defies those outrageous performance specs.

We went for a ride in a Porsche 918 Spyder prototype a year in advance of its build date?which, you guessed it, is Sept. 18, 2013. Here's what we learned.

The Tech: One High-Strung Hybrid

There's a point to this bonanza of incomprehensibly complex technology: The 918 Spyder serves as a bleeding-edge testbed for future Porsche hybrids and a dramatic statement about the company's engineering prowess. Built around a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic tub, this amalgam of internal combustion and electric power constitutes a wish list of ultra-high-performance components.

The fossil-fuel-burning part of the equation consists of a dry-sump-equipped 4.6-liter V-8 that spins 580 hp at a screaming 8500 rpm. That's 50 more hp than the LMP2 race car from which the mill is derived. Rear power is driven through a seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission adapted from the 911 Turbo S.

Assisting the internal combustion effort are a 95-kilowatt hybrid module at the rear axle and an 85-kw electric motor driving the front. Together they can pump out 795 hp. A separate gearbox diverts electric power to the front wheels, decoupling above 146 mph. Power is stored (and regenerated into) a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery with 312 individual cells, which can also be charged using a household 110-volt plug. And 55 control units manage the interplay between fuel and electric power. Because efficient performance is the name of the game, there was no consideration given for a hydraulic steering system; the 918 Spyder uses an electromechanical setup with a rear steer feature, which can countersteer to offer quicker turns at low speeds or turn in the same direction of the fronts at higher speeds to prevent the tail from kicking out.

A small red steering wheel button lets you select from five options for the hybrid powertrain: E-Power (all-electric, which can run for up to 16 miles), Hybrid (which uses gas and electric power for maximum efficiency), Sport Hybrid (a more aggressive version of Hybrid), Race Hybrid (in which the electric motors offer short bursts of high output), and Hot Lap (which drains the batteries in an all-out attempt for maximum speed.)

Active aerodynamic features include air inlets below the headlights, a rear wing that deploys and alters the angle of attack, and underfloor air flaps positioned ahead of the front axle to direct air into diffuser channels. The 918 Spyder is expected to tip the scales at 3747 pounds, or 3670 pounds with the stripped-down Weissach package.

The Ride: From Silent to Speeding

We conducted our shotgun ride in a Porsche 918 Spyder on the roads surrounding Germany's famed N?rburgring, where the car later turned in its previously mentioned astounding lap time. Our tester, which was one of 20 or so preproduction vehicles in existence, wore an exterior that's about 80 percent complete, according to one Porsche engineer, and mechanical components that are roughly 70 percent finished.

At idle in the N?rburgring pits, you might never guess that this waist-high prototype is capable of neck-snapping performance. Yes, heat rises with menace from the rear decklids (during development the exhaust pipes migrated to an upward position because that was the only way to manage the intense thermal interplay between battery and internal combustion). However, the sound coming from the V-8 is raw and unrefined.

Still, there's plenty of acoustic tuning that will help make the 918 sound expensive once it actually hits the market. The roadster's seat-of-the-pants impressions reveal far more about how this complicated beast operates.

As we pull out of the pits in EV mode, the nearly silent whir of the electric motor replaces the din of the V-8. This Porsche tester being a work in progress, there are still some driveline noises and high-pitched frequencies making their way into the cabin. But, apart from the bulky diagnostic equipment and cobbled-together interior parts, the 918 scoots along with potent authority.

As the driver selects Hybrid mode, the V-8 comes to life, acceleration gets noticeably huskier, and all four wheels do their part to pull the 918 ahead with alacrity. The engine shuts down and fires up intermittently in this mode, and while the transition feels somewhat (but not entirely) seamless, the underlying grunt feels satisfyingly robust.

That is, until we experience a brief but intoxicating stretch in Race Hybrid mode, which reveals the 918's ability to dart forward with long-legged insistence, digging into tarmac with Michelin tires that seem to accelerate, brake, and corner with more g-forces than should be possible from efficiency-minded rubber. That momentary dalliance with thrust is a tasty tease into what promises to be a full repertoire of relentless, jaw-clenching performance.

The Bottom Line: The Trickledown Effect

The Porsche 918 Spyder's personality might be defined by numbers: 0-to-60 mph in under 3 seconds, 78.4 mpg (which will likely drop when the EPA offers it own rating), and that outrageous N?rburgring lap time. Yet the true magic of this car lies in how its traditional internal combustion marries to the techy world of hybrid powertrains.

Only 918 paying customers will be able to pony up the near-seven-figure price tag to have their own 918. But this most technologically ambitious Porsche will eventually be known as the car that enabled exotic hybrid drivetrain components to trickle down into more accessible cars. And for that, the 918 Spyder is a perfectly justifiable exercise in excess.

China's Baosteel suspends production at loss-making plant

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Baoshan Iron & Steel Co (Baosteel), China's biggest listed steelmaker, said it has suspended production at a loss-making plant in Shanghai, in a sign of the intense pressure on the sector as steel prices trade near three-year lows.

The steelmaker is one of the first major Chinese mills to publicly announce it is suspending production, but with the world's second-biggest economy cooling and banks restricting lending to an industry that built up $400 billion of debt during years of double-digit growth more suspensions are likely.

The plant, in Shanghai's Luojing district which produces steel plates used for ship building, oil rigs and construction, has been losing money due to weak demand and high costs, the firm said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

"With demand from the shipbuilders so weak, other producers such as Angang Steel are also facing pressure," said Helen Lau, a senior metals analyst at UOB-Kay Hian, noting further suspensions would depend on whether firms could compensate losses from other profitable units.

In an effort to kickstart the economy, Beijing approved some $150 billion worth of infrastructure projects earlier this month, but there are doubts steel demand in the world's largest producer will pick up soon.

"The government's infrastructure investment may only improve sentiment ... but I don't expect a big lift in steel demand," Zhang Dianbo, assistant president of Baosteel, told reporters at an industry conference.

China's crude steel production fell 2 percent in mid-September to 1.857 million tonnes per day after a surprise 1.2 percent increase in early September.

HEAVY LOSSES

UOB-Kay's Lau said the Loujing plant was also more costly to run because of its technology, whereby furnaces use the Corex smelting process of gasifying non-coking coal to produce pig iron.

A Baosteel source, who has worked at the Luojing plant, told Reuters the facility would eventually be shut as part of broader plans to relocate operations away from Shanghai.

Chinese steel makers, already battling over capacity, have been struggling with razor thin profits or losses since Beijing's clamp down on the real estate sector hit steel demand.

The Luojing plant, which Baosteel acquired in 2008 for 14 billion yuan ($2.22 billion) and has an annual capacity of 3 million tonnes, halted its first furnace in July 2011, according a report in a weekly publication called Investor China.

The second furnace, which was operating at a monthly loss of 100 million yuan, was suspended along with the complex earlier this month, the paper said, citing a worker at the plant.

IRON ORE PRICE

China's steel rebar futures, mainly used in construction, have slumped as much as 24 percent this year to touch a three-year low of 3,206 yuan in early September. Prices has since ticked up after the government approved some $150 billion yuan worth of infrastructure projects.

Weak demand has also hurt iron ore, a key steel making ingredient. The price of ore <.io62-cni> has fallen to three-year lows at below $87 a metric ton earlier this month as waning steel demand in China cut demand for the raw material.

Iron ore prices have since bounced back to above $100, but remain 30 percent off this year's peak as Chinese steel mills curb output.

Baosteel posted a 53-percent drop in first-half profit, excluding one-off items, and expects steel prices to remain under pressure for the rest of this year.

Baosteel shares slipped 0.22 percent by 0339 GMT, against a 0.27 percent gain in the broader Shanghai index.

Yosemite workers' blood examined for hantavirus clues

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Public health officials have begun examining blood samples and questionnaire results from dozens of Yosemite National Park workers who volunteered for a study designed to shed light on an unprecedented outbreak of deadly hantavirus.

This week's screening, which involved 96 workers, is the latest effort by officials to uncover clues about the rare, mouse-borne lung disease that has infected at least nine park visitors and killed three since June.

"This is a unique opportunity to learn more about potential exposure to hantavirus from the people who lived and worked in close proximity to this cluster of cases," park spokesman John Quinley said Thursday.

One aim is to help researchers design a study of the California park's more than 2,500 workers in a search for clues about how the virus infects people and how to prevent it.

Among the lingering questions over the outbreak is why hantavirus infected park visitors while sparing employees.

All but one of the nine infected visitors stayed in Curry Village in double-walled, insulated tent cabins later found to be infested with deer mice. The tiny, white-bellied mice carry the airborne virus in their droppings, urine and saliva.

The park closed the infested tent cabins at the end of August, after learning of two of the hantavirus deaths.

This week's screening will examine park workers' blood for antibodies signaling exposure to the hantavirus. Employees also answered questions about where they live, their contact with mice, their job duties and their hantavirus training, Quinley said.

"We've had a lot of employees go through hantavirus training," he said. "We're interested in knowing if the training works."

The voluntary study is part of a broader scientific effort that will include the first whole-genome sequencing for the hantavirus strain that struck Yosemite over the summer. It marked the biggest cluster of cases since the disease was first identified in the United States in 1993.

At that time, when hantavirus pulmonary syndrome infected healthy young adults in the Four Corners region of Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico, Navajo elders linked the outbreak to an abundance of pine nuts and an explosion of mice coming out for the feast.

Since then, more than 600 Americans have been diagnosed with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The incurable disease kills more than a third of those infected.

To date, humans have never been known to transmit the virus. People can inhale the hantavirus when mice droppings mix with dust, especially in confined, poorly ventilated spaces.

Giants won't bring back Cabrera for postseason

(AP) ? The San Francisco Giants have informed Melky Cabrera's agent they won't bring the suspended outfielder back at any point this postseason.

Manager Bruce Bochy made the announcement before Thursday's series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco's final regular-season home game.

"We have decided not to send Melky on a rehab assignment because we do not intend to add him to any playoff roster," Bochy said. "We had to make this decision early because Melky would have to start rehabbing in Arizona. We have decided to develop our roster from our current group of players. They've done a terrific job during the critical part of the season. We have informed Melky's agent and they understand. I just like the way this club has played down the stretch and moved on. So we're going to move forward without Melky."

Bochy said the NL West champion Giants will go into the best-of-five divisional series with the current roster. Cabrera's suspension takes him through the first five games of the playoffs, so he would have been eligible in the NL championship series if San Francisco advanced.

"While I am disappointed that I won't have the chance to join my team in the playoffs, I wish my teammates the best in the postseason and I'll be rooting hard for them to bring another world championship to San Francisco!" Cabrera said in a statement through his representatives.

The All-Star game MVP, batting an NL-leading .346, was suspended Aug. 15 for a positive testosterone text. Last Friday, Cabrera asked to be removed from contention for the NL batting crown, saying he had no wish to win a tainted title.

Hall of Famer Wade Boggs feels Cabrera made the right decision.

"I'm glad that he stood up and said that he didn't deserve it, number one, because he cheated to get to that point," Boggs said in a phone interview. "I would have thought Major League Baseball would have stepped in before that and sort of disqualified him on that fact. But he's a stand-up guy, and as far as (public relations) concerns, it's was pretty good for his corner, for him to do something like that."

Bochy was asked whether anything happening that could change in the team's thinking regarding Cabrera if there was a significant injury or other unforeseen circumstance.

"I can't say I can right now," Bochy said. "We've made this decision and that's where we're at right now. I'm not going to get into anything that's hypothetical," Bochy said. "We have a number of outfielders. ... We have a big roster here. They've all done a good job and stepped up when we needed them. We're going to have a 25-man roster from the guys you can see here right now."

Cabrera was batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs in his first season with San Francisco and is five hits shy of 1,000 in his big league career. He is set to become a free agent after the season.

Bochy said he would talk to his players about the decision either later Thursday or Friday. Players weren't consulted beforehand, Bochy said of what was an organizational decision.

"Melky understands," Bochy said. "I think it's in the best interest of this club if you look how we've played and all we've been through. These guys have really done a great job. They're the reason why we're in this situation. They've earned this and we're going to go with the 25 guys we have here."

Qualcomm to release two new budget quad-core S4 chips

Qualcomm

Qualcomm has announced that two new Snapdragon S4s are on the way, with both touting quad-core CPUs with a budget-friendly price. The MSM8225Q and MSM8625Q both build on the S4 design, complete with support for LPDDR2 memory, Wifi, Bluetooth 4.0 and FM connectivity using the Qualcomm Atheros AR6005 and WCN2243 chips.

The major difference between the two chips is that the Snapdragon S4 Play MSM8625Q features Qualcomm's integrated multimode UMTS/CDMA modem, and the MSM8225Q has an integrated UMTS modem. In layman's speak -- the MSM8625Q will work on Verizon and Sprint. The real difference, and likely where the cost cutting comes into play, is in the GPU. Snapdragon "Pro" models feature a stronger graphics processor, though the exact model in tonight's new chips hasn't been disclosed.

If you're a hardware nerd, the long version is in the press release after the break. If you're not, just know that Qualcomm is making a slightly cheaper, yet still high-end quad-core CPU to power the next generation of mid-level handsets. It's good news all around.

From the lab: Lumia 920 low-light shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III

From the lab Lumia 920 lowlight shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III video

It looks like Nokia's controversial marketing move, which involved using pro DSLRs to "simulate" low-light shooting, was even less necessary than the smartphone maker may have thought. During our visit to the company's Tampere, Finland research and development complex, we were given access to a comprehensive testing suite, enabling us to shoot with a Lumia 920 prototype and a handful of competing products in a controlled lighting environment. Technicians dimmed the lights and let us snap a static scene with each handset at just 5 lux -- a level on par with what you may expect on a dimly lit city street in the middle of the night. The 920 took the cake, without question, but the iPhone didn't fare too poorly itself, snatching up nearly as much light as the Nokia device. The 808 PureView also performed quite well, but the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III yielded unusable results.

It's one thing to snag proper exposure, though -- capturing sharp details with little noise and superior color balance is an entirely different beast, and the Lumia managed to do just that, as you'll see in our 100-percent-view shots further on. Later in the evening we hit the streets of Helsinki for a real-world shootout. The 920 did present some issues with exaggerated shake and other rapid movements, but it offered up excellent results overall, even in scenes that were too dark for us to make out any details with our own eyes. Our nighttime shoot can be found in the gallery below, followed by plenty of comparison photos after the break.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.chemicals.frost.com), Strategic Analysis of Asia-Pacific Personal Care Active Ingredients Market, finds that the market earned revenues of US$116.6 million in 2011 and estimates this to reach US$176.4 million in 2017.

"Technological innovations are giving market participants a competitive edge by enhancing the ingredients' functionality," said Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Dr.Nandhini Rajagopal. "Following the success of the new ingredients, manufacturers are replacing traditional materials with innovative ingredients; for instance, light emollients are replacing some silicon products in final formulations."

The cosmetics industry is riding a crest due to the higher spending power of the people in the region. As the Asia Pacific is expected to be economically strong for the next few years, the demand for cosmetics, and thereby, active ingredients, is likely to be high.

Meanwhile, changing lifestyles and poor food habits are also altering strategies in the personal care active ingredient market. Premature aging due to lifestyle habits has created a new target group of 27-40 year olds for personal care products.

Apart from these shifting patterns, the biggest challenge faced by the active ingredient suppliers in the Asia Pacific is the smuggling and counterfeiting of ingredients. They are also significantly pegged back by competition from low-priced Chinese products.

As these illegal products evade import duty and sales tax, their suppliers can afford to price them competitively and still gain huge margins, placing enormous pressure on legitimate suppliers.

Countries need to design strict regulations and enforce adherence to eliminate the threat from counterfeit and smuggled personal care products. Further, suppliers could also establish local manufacturing facilities to mitigate the effects of this challenge.

"Strategic relationships between manufacturers will also help synergise their strengths and overcome individual weaknesses," noted Rajagopal. "While vertical integration of industries can result in higher margins, horizontal integrations are expected to expand the product line."

Such alliances have been useful to the majors operating in this segment, and could be replicated by other participants.

Is sibling birth order in FTM after syncing fixed yet? - Family Tree ...

I know when I insert children in a family on the ancestry.com family tree, the children are listed in birth order from oldest to youngest. When you sync the ancestry.com tree to your FTM tree on your computer, the birth order gets all messed up. It seems like everytime I want to print a decendants chart of someone, the children are all out of order. Has this been fixed with the latest update, or does this problem continue?

Importance of an SEO Company aimed at your web and Business ...

Search Engine Optimization, Important to Every Internet site

The importance of Search engine marketing (or search engine optimization) cannot be exceedingly emphasized. An online site that is well-optimized rates higher browsing engines, and also this normally produces a surge within traffic plus an increase in the particular site?s on the internet visibility. For the site designed solely with regard to business or perhaps commercial purposes, these benefits translate to sales as well as profit.

Even so, it?s unlucky that only a few webmasters spend money on SEO. Many rookie site owners think that spamming their site using quality submissions are enough to draw in traffic, and so, traffic. Should you be one of these website owners, you might want to alter this distinct thinking and commence looking for an Seo firm.

Importance of a search engine optimization Company to Your Site as well as Business

What makes an SEO firm help your internet site and your organization?

1. Enhance your site?s standing in search search engines

SEO is about rankings, and so the best Search engine marketing companies struggle one another to set their clients along with search engines, specially Google. There is so much visitors to be had when your internet site appears along with SERPs (or perhaps search engine results pages). After all, an end user clicks on the very first link which appears on the results page.

2. Increase traffic

There are several ways to build traffic to your site, but when your site ranks high on the internet, you nearly don?t have to develop promoting your site. As long as you entrust the job towards the best Seo firm.

3. Supercharge your website?s on the internet presence

Besides optimizing your site to rank at the top of Google, Search engine marketing companies may be trusted to construct your web site?s online presence. These companies understand the most efficient as well as effective ways to market your website in order to build your brand and expand your readership.

Four. Increase revenue and revenue

If your web site sits along with Google Search results and has an extensive readership, assured that your sales as well as revenues will also increase.

Guidelines in Employing a Company for the Optimization Requirements

There are a lot associated with companies in direct competition to gain at least a few minutes of your respective attention. Although not all of them are built the same. So to make sure that you pick the right one particular for your internet site, here are some recommendations to take.

First, be sure that the company includes a good status. And if achievable, pick a firm with a manufacturer or is in your neighborhood. For example, if you live within New York, localize your searches as well as pick the best Seo firm in New York. Also, look for a company having a rich portfolio. And of course, remember to go over the company?s price item listings.

Hello World! | U*Reka

Under the roof

According to Simon Cozens,??Hello World!??is the ?traditional incantation to the programming gods to help you learn the (programming) language better?.[1]?I have been trying?to learn programming for quite?a long time, but never had the chance to write my first ?Hello World? programme.

So, why would I, or someone with an architectural background want to learn programming? The reason is simple. It is a trend, and also?a response to a need. Technology affects our lifestyles, and?even the way we design. With the?advent of?the Internet, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Building Information Modeling (BIM), as well as parametric design, the skill sets of the architects nowadays are very different compared to a few decades ago.?If we think of computers as?our best design assistants these days,?we should use them?to?do what they are best at ??performing spontaneous repetitive calculations and storing huge amounts of information.

A designer?s imagination has no boundaries, but the most common limitation he may face?is the tools he uses. Computers have limits,?so we have to push those limits. Today?s computers are much more powerful than ten years ago, yet they are still unable to accomplish?certain tasks that we humans can think of. Rather than waiting for the super computers of the future to arrive, I believe it is time to?make a paradigm shift in terms of?design thinking, methodology, and even?our working relationship?with the computers, so that we can still achieve something great within current technological limitations.

People often refer to the computing industry as ?Information Technology?, or ?IT? in short. Exchanging information is communication. Although?it may appear?that the only communication happens between human end-users,?computers are involved in the process as well -?they are the agents of their respective end-users, translating between human input and matrices of ?0?s &?1?s.

If we want to make sure that computers?perform their duties properly, then we need to communicate with computers in languages?that they can interpret and understand. Most of the time, this communication is carried out in the form of a programme, or a script in my case.

In this article, I would like to share my experience with my Master Thesis project at NUS -?both the sweet and bitter memories about design with procedural rule-based modelling.

Suzhou: Aerial View

My thesis design scheme was to create a series of floating food markets along the moats surrounding the ancient city of Suzhou, in preparation for the global energy-descent future. I started with the premise that Inland Water Transport (IWT)?would be?a more energy-efficient alternative to the predominant?motorway transport. Suzhou, the city also known as ?the Venice of the Orient?, was chosen to host the project site,?because 42% of the city is covered by water, with 24km of navigable canals in the urban districts. Using the food market network as an architectural intervention,?my thesis aimed to remedy the broken relationship between the waterways and the residents in Suzhou. It also attempted to address?local issues regarding food safety and food prices.

The project embarked from the current post-peak oil global situation. Global oil consumption patterns have indicated that, almost half of the annual oil consumption is related to transportation. It follows that if we could?change?the way that we move people and goods around the world, a new low energy footprint lifestyle would result, which would ease the worrying energy future scenario by a significant extent.

The next question was: Can the scenario be improved via any architectural means in the near future, say 2030? Where to start?? Being one of the fastest developing economies in the world, the energy demand?in China is?obviously high. China ranks second in terms of oil consumption, immediately after the USA.

As a 2nd tier city, Suzhou has?a fast-developing economy?and more flexibility to be shaped, compared to 1st?tier cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen. In?my design scheme, there are eight floating markets in total, located along the moats surrounding the ancient Suzhou city, immediately outside the downtown area. All the markets are located at the intersections between the public transport routes and waterways, and are connected via riverfront walkways.

A procedural rule-based design workflow?was adopted both?at the urban scale and at the building level.

The Waterborne Suzhou

Location of Suzhou, Jiangsu, China

Built in 514 B.C., ancient Suzhou city had already developed an extensive canal system a long time ago. These canals?have been?well maintained, added, joined, and extended over the subsequent?25 centuries, and they remain remarkably well maintained today,?despite the fact that?they are seldom?used. The canals reach almost every corner of the city, from the downtown old streets, to the farms and agricultural land at the outskirts of the city.

Suzhou (Downtown) Canal Network in 2000

The Eight Markets

Overview of the 8 Sites

There are?eight markets in total. All the?eight locations were chosen based on the same set of requirements:

  1. There must be three main lines, namely the river (blue), the parallel road (red), and the flyover bridge (black) connecting the downtown Suzhou and outer districts.
  2. The market locations cannot be too close to one another, to?ensure the efficiency of the market distribution and coverage.
  3. The passengers will approach the markets via public transport on land;?the food will be delivered by boats via the canals to the markets.

Rules for Walkway/Market Platform

Walkway Modelling Rules

Taking the loop of the moats as the starting line, the two banks of the canal give the first?two curves.

  1. A third curve is the nearest road, adjacent to the outer bank of the canal.
  2. The centre line is divided into 1982 segments, 8 meters apart (8m is considered to be the ?suitable column span, important for the modeling of market roof later)
  3. Two different types of event nodes are assigned (Market v.s. River Branch)
  4. The platform section will always be represented by a line formed by 24 points. The arrangement of the points will vary according to the FOUR different scenarios of event permutation along the waterway.

[A] River Branch Event: The platform will be raised at a level of +4.5m above the annual water level, to allow boats to enter and leave the ring of canal.

[B] Market Event: An additional platform will be generated from the 5th staircase step, form a parabolic shape for the market space, allowing trade to take place.

Platform Variants

Rules for Market Roof (5 lines)

All heights in the chart are measured from the annual average water level. The roof structure covers the 180m range from the market location. The distance from?the location?point, X, is the control parameter which affects the roof profile.

Acoustic Barrier Tip varies according to the (1) height of nearest road, and (2) distance to the nearest road.

Roof Edge is kept almost constant.

Central Roof Ridge has a parabolic increment from 9m to 15m.

The Roof Kink?takes off and starts to catch up with the Central Roof Ridge 40m from the market location. This is to provide a horizontal roof at the joint to the flyover. Pedestrians can thus access the food market not only from the road running parallel?to it, but also directly from the flyover bridge. (Suzhou is a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly city; all major roads have at least 4m wide pedestrian walkways on both sides.)

Site One ? Roof Sectional Profiles

Up to this point, all the above processes?were carried out in Houdini?? a parametric modelling software program developed by SideFX. Despite being a very flexible modelling tool, it could only allow me to model the rough backbone of the structure. After all,?this was a design for the entire urbanscape, and there was a?tremendous?number of elements to be included. Any further detailing of the design would?have a?multiplying effect due to the project scale, and my computer memory would soon?become a bottleneck.

I decided?to export the individual?market models,?in order to?focus on and develop the design on a building scale. To do this,?I had to solve two problems. First,?the inter-operability?between software programmes, i.e., whether the model exported from Houdini could be accepted by the second programme. ?The other problem was how to continue with the same rule-based procedural modelling in the new software. The size of one market is?quite large, and if I were to model each single component, I would miss the submission deadline for sure.

I?found my saviour ? Rhinoceros, a NURBS?modeling software developed by McNeel. With a Rhino plug-in ? Panelling Tools, I could easily solve these two headaches at one shot. ?

To simplify the design language, I adopted 5 types of panel geometries ? quadrilaterals with apertures of various sizes. Horizontal Roof Panels and Acoustic Barrier Panels, are two special cases.

?

Exploded View of Components

?

Rule-based Panelling Technique

The space beneath the roof?would be?poorly lit due to the deep plan, so?I?decided to introduce more natural daylight to the space. A repulsion sphere was placed in the centre of each Horizontal Roof Panel to distort the rectangular grid?so that the panels in the middle?would be?larger. Based on their proximity to the repulsion sphere, panels with larger apertures were located nearer to the middle. The effect of the ?light well? effect can be seen from the renderings. I also wanted to retain the visual connection between the two sides of the Acoustic Barrier. An attraction line was used to represent the average eye level of the pedestrians on the road side, and?panels closer to the attraction line have larger apertures.

Site No. 1

During the last month of my thesis project, I took a gamble to switch my operating system from 32-bit Windows 7 to 64-bit Windows 7. The only intention was to increase the usable computer memory?to more than?4 GB. It was a risky decision, as the compatibility of?some?software is not guaranteed. There were some moments of pure panic, as I tried?to find solutions or alternative methods to various issues that cropped up from online forums.

Eventually I was very pleased to finish the entire production within 3 weeks. Although the limitations of both software and hardware can be deeply frustrating, the benefits of rule-based procedural modelling have been tried and tested and it?is in my opinion, well worth the effort. ?

Clearwire starts building LTE network this month, wants to salve (and profit from) Sprint growing pains

Sprint hearts Clearwire

Clearwire doesn't have much time left before its promised LTE rollout goes live in early 2013, so it's with some relief that we know the deployment is getting underway. CFO Hope Cochran told those at Goldman Sachs' Communacopia Conference this week that construction of the first cell sites starts this month, with efforts truly swinging into full gear during the fall. The executive also reminded us of a very pragmatic reason why many of the 5,000 LTE sites due by June 30th will target high-traffic areas -- as Clearwire is only selling the faster data access to other providers, it should pocket more money in any regions where Sprint needs all the help it can get. Call it a virtuous cycle. Cochran certainly does: while Clearwire is free to make deals with others, Cochran says her company weighs any alliances against what it still considers a very special pact with Sprint. No doubt the 4G pioneer is hoping that it's making the right choices, as other carriers aren't waiting around.
