Job Alternatives for graduates with a Liberal Arts degree | Reference ...

"Liberal arts - you've got to be joking!

What does that subject even teach you anyway?

And how are you ever going to find a job?"

If you have a major in liberal arts, you have most likely heard concerns like those.

And to add to the confusion, "liberal arts" does not consistently mean precisely the same thing to everyone.

Although some use a broad definition that usually includes mathematics, basic sciences, and economics, other people refer more specifically to the humanities and social sciences.

Majors that are normally classified as "Liberal Arts" under both definitions are history, English literature, women's studies, anthropology, foreign languages, philosophy, and international relations.

But even when you've explained what a liberal arts major is, it could be challenging to know how a liberal arts degree will lead to a fulfilling and lucrative career.

Luckily, students who study liberal arts can pursue a range of job alternatives.

For the most part this is due to the fact today's employers are in need of candidates with capabilities in subjects like communications, problem-solving and critical evaluation, as well as the capability to take initiative and work as part of a group.

These are all abilities that almost all liberal arts students typically obtain training in as part of their undergraduate and graduate studies.

That does not mean that obtaining a job when you graduate will not take effort and persistence.

A bit of outside-the-box thinking can be required to enable employers to realize the worth of your liberal arts degree.

First of all, understand that you have got lots of alternatives beyond the obvious ones.

An English degree is certainly good training to become an English teacher or a writer, but other career fields that require excellent communications abilities include public relations, advertising, and in some cases sales and marketing.

And the analytical skills of a history graduate could be used in the technical writing, journalist, or even legal assistant fields.

And geography majors are nicely suited to positions in location-based urban planning and also public policy and administration.

One more choice that will assist liberal arts students entering the workforce would be to pursue a minor or other education in a technical or business subject.

Some colleges and universities specifically provide programs that train liberal arts students in real-world skills.

For example, some universities offer instruction in art appraisal for their art or art history students, while others offer certification programs in translation and interpretation for language majors.

Lastly, many employers consider internships to be one of the most efficient approaches for discovering new staff.

Internships give liberal arts majors a hands-on opportunity to find out more about their chosen career.

And don't overlook other work training opportunities like summer jobs, part-time positions, and also volunteer positions which will help you gain the expertise and professional contacts that can give you an advantage in finding your 1st position after graduation.

To summarize, whatever job-related expertise you might get when you are attending college will certainly help you gain practical job capabilities and build a reputation as being a trusted and effective employee.

And building a solid reputation as a great worker or volunteer is helpful for jobseekers in need of references and an edge which will make their resume stand out when they are applying for job openings.

Should You Buy a Standby Generator?

Blackouts are nothing new, but major storms over the past two years have hammered home the importance of electrical power. Last fall Hurricane Sandy pummeled the Northeast, disrupting power for more than 8 million customers and leaving families homeless as temperatures dropped. Sandy blew in just 12 months after a historically destructive snowstorm hit the same region. In fact, 2011 was among the nation's worst years on record for grid-disabling natural disasters, with power interruptions longer than 24 hours affecting 21 million customers. Sadly, Sandy promised a second consecutive year of dire power-outage numbers.

While big-box stores quickly sold out of portable gasoline-powered generators after the storm, Generac, Briggs & Stratton, and Kohler announced that they would ramp up production of standby generators, which can energize a home nonstop for days. But these sophisticated machines also can cost more than $20,000 installed, and some are the size of a Fiat 500. Here are six points to help you decide whether they're worth the investment.

1. What They Are

Standby generators offer a steadfast solution to extended outages. Unlike portable generators, they're installed permanently on a concrete pad in your yard and will provide uninterrupted backup for days. That's because they're connected directly to your home's electrical panel and powered by an external fuel supply, such as natural gas, liquid propane, or diesel. Smaller, air-cooled essential-circuit units (below) are slightly larger than portable generators and can energize just a few circuits at a time. Larger, liquid-cooled whole-house systems will do just as their name suggests?they'll comfortably power an entire home.

2. How They Work

The brains behind the operation is an automatic transfer switch that disconnects you from your utility after detecting an interruption in service. Once your home is safely off the grid, the switch starts up the generator before transferring its power to the home's electrical panel. At the heart of the system is an internal combustion engine, which is usually fueled by the local natural gas supply. Where natural gas isn't available, liquid propane or diesel stored in a large tank nearby can be used. Keep in mind these systems rely on a finite amount of fuel that could run dry if storm damage prevents delivery or increased demand hampers supply.

When municipal power resumes, the switch shuts down the generator and reconnects your house to the grid. This seamless operation makes standby generators ideal for families with small children, as well as those needing uninterrupted use of electric-powered medical equipment. They're also crucial for anyone running a home business. The transfer switch acts as a safety mechanism too: It prevents back-feeding electricity to the grid, a potentially lethal practice that can start fires and harm utility workers attempting to restore your neighborhood's power.

3. Installation Drawbacks

Cities often have noise ordinances restricting the installation of generators. A machine may be rated at 62 decibels, but that's often measured at 25 feet. What does that sound like? Imagine a neighbor idling a Harley?tolerable in a rural environment but unacceptable in a tight city lot. Additionally, most building codes require generators to be at least 5 feet from a house opening and 5 feet from flammable materials, making urban installations tricky. Fuel-tank placement is almost always restricted, especially near parking lots and schools.

A relative from the Tianyuan Cave: Humans living 40,000 years ago likely related to many present-day Asians and Native Americans

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Ancient DNA has revealed that humans living some 40,000 years ago in the area near Beijing were likely related to many present-day Asians and Native Americans.

An international team of researchers including Svante P??bo and Qiaomei Fu of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, sequenced nuclear and mitochondrial DNA that had been extracted from the leg of an early modern human from Tianyuan Cave near Beijing, China. Analyses of this individual's DNA showed that the Tianyuan human shared a common origin with the ancestors of many present-day Asians and Native Americans. In addition, the researchers found that the proportion of Neanderthal and Denisovan-DNA in this early modern human is not higher than in people living in this region nowadays.

Humans with morphology similar to present-day humans appear in the fossil record across Eurasia between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago. The genetic relationships between these early modern humans and present-day human populations had not yet been established. Qiaomei Fu, Matthias Meyer and colleagues of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, extracted nuclear and mitochondrial DNA from a 40,000 year old leg bone found in 2003 at the Tianyuan Cave site located outside Beijing. For their study the researchers were using new techniques that can identify ancient genetic material from an archaeological find even when large quantities of DNA from soil bacteria are present.

The researchers then reconstructed a genetic profile of the leg's owner. "This individual lived during an important evolutionary transition when early modern humans, who shared certain features with earlier forms such as Neanderthals, were replacing Neanderthals and Denisovans, who later became extinct," says Svante P??bo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, who led the study.

The genetic profile reveals that this early modern human was related to the ancestors of many present-day Asians and Native Americans but had already diverged genetically from the ancestors of present-day Europeans. In addition, the Tianyuan individual did not carry a larger proportion of Neanderthal or Denisovan DNA than present-day people in the region. "More analyses of additional early modern humans across Eurasia will further refine our understanding of when and how modern humans spread across Europe and Asia," says Svante P??bo.

Parts of the work were carried out in a new laboratory jointly run by the Max Planck Society and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.

Monitoring of immune function in critically ill children with influenza reveals severe immune suppression in non-survivors

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Investigators from 15 children's medical centers, including Nationwide Children's Hospital, observed and evaluated critically ill children with influenza to evaluate the relationships between levels of systemic inflammation, immune function and likelihood to die from the illness. The study appears in the January issue of Critical Care Medicine.

The innate immune system is the cellular arm of the immune system that serves as a first-responder to new threats, and is thought to drive the inflammatory response in many forms of critical illness. Recent evidence indicates that suppression of innate immune system function can occur in critically ill patients.

This immune suppression can be quantified in the laboratory through measurement of the capacity of the patient's blood to produce a specific cytokine, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-? , when stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a substance which should induce a robust TNF ? response. Patients with innate immune suppression produce reduced amounts of TNF? when their blood is stimulated. In its most severe form, this condition is known as immunoparalysis. Severe reductions in TNF? production capacity have been associated with the development of secondary bacterial infections and death in critically ill adults and children.

Immune function is not routinely measured in patients with influenza, though some therapies used in this population, such as corticosteroids, can be potently immunosuppressive.

"Both pro- and anti-inflammatory therapies have been proposed as additional treatment options for influenza infection," explains lead study author Mark Hall, MD, Critical Care specialist and principal investigator in the Center for Clinical and Translational Research of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "However, a lack of immune monitoring data in the pediatric population has made therapeutic decision-making difficult in children."

In this first-of-its-kind, multicenter observational study, blood samples from critically ill children with influenza were tested using highly standardized techniques to determine the capacity of the participants' innate immune system to produce TNF? when stimulated with LPS. Healthy control subjects also had their blood tested for the same properties.

Results indicated that despite high levels of circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines, critically ill children with influenza demonstrated lower TNF? production capacity compared with healthy control subjects. Further, children who died from influenza had markedly lower TNF? production capacity compared with survivors. Patients who were co-infected with influenza and the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus showed the greatest degree of immune suppression.

While the reduced capacity to produce TNF? among the critically ill children compared to healthy subjects was expected, the degree of reduction in capacity was severe enough to be highly predictive of death from the illness.

"The study demonstrates a strong relationship between mortality and reduced innate immune responsiveness in critically ill patients," said Dr. Hall, also a faculty member at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. "It also demonstrates the feasibility of large-scale immune monitoring of the kind necessary to develop and test therapies for these critically ill children. The identification of potential treatment thresholds is important because strong evidence suggests that innate immune suppression associated with critical illness may be reversible."

Advocating for additional studies, investigators suggest that patient-specific immune monitoring could aid in determining the most effective treatment for these critically ill patients. Therapies that stimulate the immune system may have a significant role in the treatment of high-risk children with severe immune suppression associated with influenza infection.

Ukrainian ex-PM suspected in murder case

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Ukrainian authorities have formally notified jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko that she is a suspect in the murder of a businessman and lawmaker in 1996.

Tymoshenko is suspected of "ordering and organizing" the contract-style murder of Yvhen Scherban, his wife and two other people, the Prosecutor General's Office said on its website Friday. Prosecutors say the killing appeared aimed at eliminating a business rival.

The move stops short of formally charging Tymoshenko, but indicates charges are likely. Prosecutors have said for months that she was being investigated in the case. Tymoshenko denies the accusations and says it is part of a broader campaign by her foe, President Viktor Yanukovych, to keep her in prison and bar her from politics.

Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year prison term for abuse of office while negotiating a gas deal with Russia in 2009.

The new case was likely to further spoil Ukraine's ties with Western nations, which have called Tymoshenko's imprisonment politically motivated. The European Union has frozen a key cooperation deal with Ukraine over Tymoshenko's imprisonment.

Tymoshenko's party said a formal announcement of suspicion represented a "shameful day in the history of the Ukrainian law enforcement system."

"Their fear has paralyzed their mind. They are no longer hiding the fact that they want to lock away for life not only the leader of the opposition, but also the whole of Ukraine," the party said in a statement.

The European Court of Human Rights is expected to rule on the Tymoshenko case in the next several weeks, and analysts said the murder case was the government's attempt to keep her in jail during the 2015 presidential campaign if the European court rules in her favor in the gas case.

"It is evident that the Ukrainian authorities are really and seriously intent on keeping Tymoshenko in jail," said Vadim Karasyov, a political analyst with ties to the government, according to the Interfax news agency.

Meanwhile, Tymoshenko's family and allies have expressed concern over the state of her health. Tymoshenko is undergoing hospital treatment for a severe back condition. Her lawyer, Serhiy Vlasenko, said Friday that when he tried to see her recently, she was unresponsive for several minutes. Doctors insisted she was in a satisfactory condition and was under the influence of sedatives.

Tymoshenko's office said Saturday that they have been unable to reach Tymoshenko and inquire about her health since that incident.

Kim Dotcom Touts New Site as Legal, 'Fresh Start' - The Hollywood ...

Fairfax Media/Getty Images

SYDNEY - Indicted Internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom formally unveiled his new file sharing and cloud storage service Mega in a press conference from his mansion near Auckland, New Zealand on Sunday, arguing that it was legal and made possible because of the shutdown of Megaupload.

STORY: Kim Dotcom's Letter to Hollywood

"This fresh start for Mega is a good thing,? the German-born, New Zealand resident said during the press conference, which was live streamed online ahead of what was billed as a lavish Sunday night launch party for the new site at his mansion.

He even argued that the downfall of his former website Megaupload made the new site possible. "It wouldn't have even been possible to do this," news organization Fairfax NZ quoted him as saying. "No one else who is currently in business in the file storage arena can just update their site and be like us, you have to start from scratch."

In an interview with Reuters, meanwhile, Dotcom emphasized that the new site launch was not meant to be revenge on Hollywood or U.S. authorities. "This is not some kind of finger to the U.S. government or to Hollywood," he said.

And he added: "Legally, there's just nothing there that could be used to shut us down. This site is just as legitimate and has the right to exist as Dropbox, Boxnet and other competitors," he said in reference to well-known cloud storage services.

STORY: Hollywood to Produce Kim Dotcom Documentary; Book in the Works

At one point during his Sunday press conference, Dotcom even said his goal was to list the new business, which uses the company name The Privacy Company, on the New Zealand Stock Exchange.

Ahead of the launch of Mega, the Motion Picture Association of America, which claims copyright infringement by Megaupload, remained skeptical.

"We are still reviewing how this new project will operate, but we do know that Kim Dotcom has built his career and his fortune on stealing creative works," the MPAA said in a statement cited by Fairfax NZ. "We'll reserve final judgment until we have a chance to take a closer look, but given Kim Dotcom's history of damaging the consumer experience by pushing stolen, illegitimate content into the marketplace, count us as skeptical."

The Mega site launched Sunday morning New Zealand time, and within several hours over 250,000 users had registered for the site, according to Dotcom. As the site went live, he tweeted: "As of this minute one year ago #Megaupload was destroyed by the US Government. Welcome to Mega.co.nz?.

Dotcom and several associates were arrested during a raid on his mansion in outer Auckland a year ago on charges of racketeering, copyright infringement and money laundering. The charges said that Doctom?s then-website, Megaupload, enabled Internet piracy and illegal downloading through its file sharing service.

Hearings about a possible extradition to the U.S. are due to be heard in New Zealand in March. Dotcom said Sunday he was hoping to stay in New Zealand if the extradition proceedings fail.

"My biggest fear is if we succeed, will there be an end - will that be enough to say, 'OK, we made a mistake, leave this guy alone' or will the people in government and the senior people in law enforcement take this defeat and be bitter about it and try and find something else,? he told the press conference.

The new Mega site has been designed by Dotcom and Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk, and Finn Batato, Dotcom?s co-accused in the Megaupload case, while industry veteran Tony Lentinos serves as the CEO.

THR?COVER:?Megaupload's?Kim?Dotcom: Inside the Wild Life and Dramatic Fall of the Nerd Who Burned Hollywood

Mega.co.nz, like Megaupload, allows users to store and share large files, providing registered users with 50 gigabytes of free storage. The key difference is an encryption and decryption feature for data transfers. The decryption keys for uploaded files are held by the users, not Mega, which means the company can't see what is in the files being shared. Dotcom can therefore argue that Mega can't be held liable for content it can not see, according to Fairfax NZ.

"Even if we wanted to, we can't go into your file and snoop and see what you have in there," the company says in an online introduction. ?We are a dedicated group of technologists who were given the time, opportunity and Internet access to build an awesome cloud storage service that will help protect your privacy. We have programmed this Internet service from scratch in Auckland, New Zealand. Unlike most of our competitors, we use a state of the art browser based encryption technology where you, not us, control the keys.?

Determine the Proper Angle for Sharpening a Knife Using Shadows

Determine the Proper Angle for Sharpening a Knife Using ShadowsDetermine the Proper Angle for Sharpening a Knife Using Shadows If you have trouble sharpening your knives at the correct angle you can give yourself an easy guide by drawing the correct angles on a piece of cardboard, mounting the drawing near your work surface, and using a flashlight or other light source to make sure you're at the proper angle.

Instructables user Organikmechanic originally created this method to help sharpen honing chisels and planes, but the basic method works great for knives as well. Use a metal straight-edge held against the blade to see your blade angle superimposed by shadow on the cardboard drawing?this eliminates the guesswork that many have when first learning to sharpen knives. The excellent Lansky sharpening system is another way to take the guesswork out of figuring out the correct angle, but that commercial solution, but can be spendy if you're on a budget.

Sharpening knives is one of those tasks that superficially seems easy, but involves a bit of geometry to get it right. Different blade edges have different types of grinds which require slightly different angles to sharpen properly, otherwise you can take off too much metal and possibly ruin the grind, requiring even more metal removal to fix.

German online gambling firm Tipp24 SE has appointed Sebastian Blohm as the new global head of external and legal affairs. Blohm comes over from Reemtsma, a subsidiary of the UK?s Imperial Tobacco Group. Tipp24 says Blohm?s focus will be on ?political level? relationships in order to help the company spread its wings beyond Germany?s borders.

Nevada-headquartered Galaxy Gaming Inc., which develops, manufactures and distributes casino table games and enhanced casino systems, has added Dan Lubin as table games project manager. Lubin comes over from Station Casinos, where he served in various capacities since 2006. Lubin is also the inventor of the EZ Pai Gow Poker table game released by DEQ Systems Corp. Galaxy CEO Robert Saucier said Lubin would be the ?perfect complement to our team? as it plans ?a number of strategic decisions to stimulate further growth of the company.?

Finally, legendary Irish horse trainer and bookie scourge Barney Curley (pictured above) has reportedly made his last wager. The 72-year-old Curley was behind the infamous ?Yellow Sam? betting incident in 1975, in which a Curley accomplice tied up the only phone line then available at Bellewstown while other accomplices across the country placed wagers at off-course bookies on Curley?s behalf. But Curley told the Belfast Telegraph ?the buzz has gone out of the game ? I haven?t had a bet since my last coup in 2010 as I would have to put in as much effort to make only half of 1% of the money we made at that time.? That ?coup? earned Curley ?4m, the last ?823k of which he received after a lengthy court fight with UK bookie Betfred, which was only resolved in Feb. 2012. Curley plans to spend his remaining days focused on his AIDS orphan charity in Zambia, Direct Aid for Africa, which he founded in the mid-1990s.

That is a really good suggestion actual :)

May I reserve Juliet?

Oh, and if you do put up FC's, you should also allow people to choose their own, just in case someone already has an idea in mind. :D (unlike me, who has no idea. XD)

@bandgeek: Someone has requested to compete with you for the role of Juliet, so I agreed to it, and said if she has a better character then you she would be able to take the character.
