Obama reassures Dems on health care, immigration

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama sought Wednesday to reassure Democrats nervous about the impact of his health care law and the prospects for immigration legislation, telling them "You're on the right side of history."

In the first of two closed-door meetings on Capitol Hill, Obama focused on financial gains as the economy emerges from the worst downturn since the Depression. He was warned about nominating former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers as chairman of the Federal Reserve and faced questions about his health care law. Some lawmakers complained that three years after its passage, the law still baffles many Americans.

Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Colo., told the president that tapping Summers to replace current Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke would be a mistake.

Obama defended Summers, saying he had been treated unfairly by the news media. The president insisted that he had not made a decision on his choice. Summers, a former Obama economic adviser, and Janet Yellen, the Fed's current vice chair, are among the leading candidates for the job.

The first major rewrite of immigration laws in a generation and legislation to keep the government running without interruption are paramount issues for Democrats. So is the president's contentious health care law, with uninsured people able to start shopping for a health plan on Oct. 1.

Provisions of the law that still confuse many Americans kick in on Jan. 1 although the administration announced earlier this month that it would delay a key requirement that employers with 50 or more workers offer affordable coverage, or face fines.

Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H., expressed concern about the health care law, mentioning that in her state there was not enough competition because only one company had entered into the health care exchange. Obama told Democrats that it was a problem in several states, but the administration was working to address the problem.

"He was reminding us as we all go back to our districts in August that we are on the right side of these issues and the right side of history in terms of providing health care to Americans and to ultimately finding comprehensive immigration reform is the right thing for the country to do at this time," said Shea-Porter.

"It was a real send-off to us, I think, as we went back to our districts that we are on the right side of history."

Said Rep. John Yarmouth, D-Ky.: "I just think he was trying to bolster the courage of the group."

Leaving the meeting, Obama said his message was about "jobs, middle class, growth."

"It's really about a focus on growing the middle class in this county after a trend of not just recession but really a couple decades of really all of Americans working really hard and not making economic progress for themselves or their kids ... Whatever we do that has to be obviously at the top of our minds," Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa., told reporters.

House Democrats presented the president with a birthday cake; Obama turns 52 on Sunday. Later in the morning, the president huddled behind closed doors with Senate Democrats.

The sessions come just days before lawmakers leave the capital for a six-week recess and the prospect of facing constituents back home at town halls at a time when polls show Congress being held in low regard.

Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., said Democrats asked the president for his assistance in next year's midterm elections, traditionally a rough ride for the party controlling the White House.

As Obama presses his economic agenda across the country, he's playing one chamber against the other in Congress, hoping Americans will hear his calls for compromise and conclude it's not his fault that little is getting done in Washington.

Call it a congressional two-step: Praise Senate Republicans for modest displays of cooperation, then contrast them with House Republicans, whom Obama has started describing as stubborn saboteurs. It's a theme Obama has used repeatedly to bolster his argument that he's the one acting reasonably as he prepares for clashes this fall with Congress, whose relations with Obama have always been notoriously strained.

"A growing number of Republican senators are trying to get things done," Obama said Tuesday as he unveiled a new fiscal proposal in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Days earlier, Obama accused the House GOP of risking another financial crisis by issuing ultimatums over the debt ceiling and government funding.

"We've seen a group of Republicans in the House, in particular, who suggest they wouldn't vote to pay the very bills that Congress has already racked up," Obama said. "That's not an economic plan. That's just being a deadbeat."

Obama has reason to be cautiously optimistic about the Senate, which passed a far-reaching immigration overhaul Obama sorely sought with bipartisan support and struck a deal over Obama's nominees that has led to a flurry of confirmations after months of logjam. A number of prominent GOP senators have also criticized a Republican plan to threaten a government shutdown unless funding is cut off for Obama's health care law.

But even in the Senate, there's skepticism about Obama's intentions. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said Obama's contrasting tone about the House and Senate amounts to a divide-and-conquer strategy that calls into question the White House's outreach.

"These discussions have been going on for five years and no agreements have been reached yet," Sessions said. "It could be the president is playing the Senate like a fiddle."

On most issues ? including pressing tax and spending matters ? Senate and House Republicans are unified in their opposition. There was no telling Republicans apart Tuesday, for instance, as they panned a corporate tax cut and jobs spending package the White House had portrayed as a concession to Republicans ? who oppose using tax revenue to support more spending.

Terminally Ill Bride Gets Dream Wedding After $50,000 Worth Of Donations From Community; 35-Year-Old Suffers Stage IV Lung Cancer

Thirty-five-year-old Jen Bulik knew there was one thing left to do after being told she had less than six months to live back in December: "get married." And with the help of friends, family, and local vendors, all of Jen's wishes came true last Saturday in a wedding she could only have dreamed of, Yahoo News reported.

Follow us

Jen had already fallen in love with her boyfriend of six years, Jeff Lang, when she received word from her doctors that a persistent cough, thought to be pneumonia, turned out to be stage IV lung Cancer. She decided her final six months would be spent focusing on life by planning her wedding with Lang.

Like most brides to be, Jen had big expectations for her wedding and made a collection of them on her Pinterest wall. Due to time and money restraints, time restraints that doctor's therapy treatments could do nothing to slow, the San Diego native thought there was little chance of her dreams being realized.

That was until wedding planner Erica Ota heard about Bulik and Lang's pending nuptials on a Facebook group. Ota enlisted the help of 30 different southern California businesses who were willing to donate $50,000 worth of goods and services to help make this dream wedding happen.

"I just feel that in life there are opportunities every day to do extraordinary things for other people," Ota told NBC Bay Area. "This was an opportunity I saw to do something for somebody else. So why not?"

Today, a fundraising account on the website giveforward.com has raised over $49,000 in support of wedding costs as well as the couple's honeymoon in Hawaii. In Erica's latest post on Monday, she called Jen and Jeff's wedding "truly magical" and even took the time to recognize every business that helped her kindhearted efforts.

As for Jen, she is still in disbelief over the kindness of strangers. "I could never have done this with my health," Jen explained to the Huffington Post.

"But because of the generosity of others, we're going to be able to focus on declaring our love for one another in a way we never dreamed possible."

  • Georgia teammates gather at home plate to cheer on ace player
  • Stunt repeated five times during two games over two days

He may only be six but Spencer Conn already seems destined for a major league career.

For the five consecutive times that the Little Leaguer stepped up to the plate, he hit home runs on his first pitch.

As the Grayson, Georgia, child sprinted around the bases, the crowd cheered loudly and his tiny teammates waited at the home plate to celebrate with him.??

What is most impressive however, is that over two games in two days, Spencer repeated the feat five times as a coach pitched to him.

In his game on the first day, Spencer managed three home runs on his first pitch, and the next day repeated the same feat twice.

?

On each occasion Spencer high-fived his coach as he completed his home run, before celebrating with his Rams' team mates who can be seen rushing to the home plate as they cheer him on.

A video on YouTube showing his accomplishment has been viewed more than 90,000 times since it was posted on July 25.

Canada's Hudson's Bay to buy Saks for $2.4 billion

By Phil Wahba

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hudson's Bay Co said on Monday it would buy Saks Inc in a $2.4 billion deal that would add prime real estate to its portfolio and bring the luxury chain to its home market of Canada.

HBC, which operates Lord & Taylor in the United States and Hudson Bay in Canada, is offering $16 per share, a 30 percent premium over levels in May right before media reports emerged Saks had put itself up for sale.

Shares of Saks rose 3.4 percent to $15.87 in premarket trading.

HBC is paying $2.9 billion in cash, including the assumption of Saks' debt.

There is a 40-day "go-shop" period when Saks can seek better bids, but the company said it did not expect to get any. It anticipates the deal will close by year-end.

Saks, famous for its iconic Fifth Avenue flagship store in Manhattan, will operate separately within HBC and have its own merchandising, marketing and store operations teams. It will also keep its New York headquarters.

HBC plans to bring Saks department stores and outlet stores into Canada by converting some of its own locations.

HBC Chief Executive Officer Richard Baker said on a conference call that he saw a potential for up to seven Saks department stores and 25 Off Fifth outlets in Canada, and noted the company would open them as quickly as possible.

That will bring it into competition with retailers like the high-end Holt Renfrew chain as well as Nordstrom Inc , which is opening its first Canadian stores in 2014.

The combined company would have flagship stores in cities such as New York, Montreal and Toronto, and HBC said it would consider creating a real estate investment trust to benefit from that portfolio. After U.S. department store chain Dillard's Inc announced plans in 2011 to form a REIT, its shares soared.

Saks' Fifth Avenue flagship, in operation since 1924, generates about $600 million in sales a year, and by some estimates, the building is worth $1 billion.

"The Fifth Avenue store is a gem and everything else is second to that," said independent retail analyst Walter Loeb. "Many of the stores are not as productive."

Saks in recent years has closed department stores in markets like Portland, Oregon, and Dallas, but pushed its Saks Off Fifth outlet chain. It has 41 full-service stores and 67 outlets.

Before the speculation about the deal started in May, Saks' shares had last hit the $16 level in early 2008, before the recession decimated luxury spending.

In late 2008, faced with collapsing sales, Saks slashed prices, decimating margins and training shoppers to expect discounts. It took three years for the retailer to start selling closer to full price.

Saks has struggled to keep pace with rivals Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus Group Inc , which each get a much bigger proportion of sales online than it does.

Saks' two largest shareholders are Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim and Italian luxury businessman Diego Della Valle, who own a combined 30.5 percent of the stock.

HBC will finance the deal with about $1 billion in new equity, $1.9 billion in senior secured loans and $400 million of senior unsecured notes, as well as cash on hand.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch was HBC's lead financial adviser, with RBC Capital Markets providing additional services. Stikeman Elliott LLP and Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP were the Canadian retailer's legal counsel.

On Saks' side, Goldman Sachs , Morgan Stanley and Guggenheim Securities were financial advisers and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz provided legal counsel.

In Bitcoin we trust: The Berlin district where virtual currency is as easy as cash

Is the virtual money known as Bitcoin the currency of the future? NBC News' Andy Eckardt reports from Berlin.

By Andy Eckardt, Producer, NBC News

BERLIN -- A sign above the counter of a popular bar in Berlin's hip Kreuzberg district warns customers of owner Joerg Platzer's somewhat peculiar payment preferences: "I believe in honest money -- gold, silver and Bitcoin."

Platzer's Room77 is among a cluster of more than two dozen local businesses to accept the virtual currency for everyday payments. Stickers with Bitcoin symbols on restaurant doors and shop windows guide the way.

Instead of paying with cash or cards, many of Platzer's customers use their Android phones to scan a code that the waitress pulls up on a tablet PC. In seconds, bitcoins are transferred to pay the bill.

"Bitcoin, as a free and decentralized currency, is a beautiful idea," Platzer said. "Thanks to Bitcoin, we have increased our customer base. On average, I would say, we now have between one and five Bitcoin customers per day and Berlin is experiencing some ... Bitcoin tourism."

Experts say that about 11 million bitcoins are in circulation today, worth an estimated $1 billion dollars.

Invented in 2009 by an anonymous programmer known only by the alias Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin has been transformed from an experiment during the financial crisis to a viable currency.

Around the corner from Room77, Ivan Crncic's printing shop started accepting Bitcoin earlier this year. For the young entrepreneur, Bitcoin is a sign of the times.

"I see that people are very interested in learning about Bitcoin and favor the currency's transparency and its freedom from government control," the 29-year-old Crncic said.

Users purchase bitcoins with the help of special software that generates a pair of unique codes, the so-called private and public keys, that are linked using mathematical encryption.?Bitcoins are sent to someone?s public key; the private key is used to send payments.

The virtual money is stored in ?wallets,? the creation of Bitcoins is called ?mining? and a ?blockchain? describes a public ledger of all transactions in the Bitcoin network.

Start-ups like Berlin-based 9flats.com, a ?share economy? platform, say that the Bitcoin concept is working in their favor.

"The main advantage for our business is that we do not lose money on transaction fees because with Bitcoin there are none," said Alexander Lossenko, lead developer at 9flats.com.

To avoid the risk of devaluation and strong fluctuation in Bitcoin prices, companies like 9flats.com often use services that convert bitcoins into euro or dollars instantly.

"It also opens new markets for us. In Russia, for example, PayPal does not exist, so Bitcoin offers another alternative for payments," Lossenko added.

Because Bitcoin is not controlled or regulated by a central bank, the money-transfer system is surrounded by legal uncertainty and could be subject to illicit use.

"If criminals, like the Mafia or other illegal organizations, start to use these systems for dubious activities, then it is something to worry about," said Georg Erber, a cyber expert at the German Institute for Economic Research.

This month, the twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, best known for a legal battle against Facebook, filed a proposal with the Securities and Exchange commission that would allow investors to trade bitcoins.

The growing popularity of the online money system is now also drawing attention from mainstream financial institutions, security outlets and policymakers.

In a recent analysis, the European Central Bank concluded that the growth of virtual currencies will continue and warned that ?periodical examination of developments? is necessary.

Sebastian Galy, a New York-based senior currency strategist with Societe Generale, said that Bitcoin should be treated more like a "speculative commodity" than as a rival to dollars or euros.

"In this case the balance sheet is a fixed amount of coins which are distributed by some algorithm somewhere based on rules that have been set a while ago by someone we don't know,? he said. "So you could argue that it has some of the elements of a currency, but it is not really a very stable unit of measurement."

That volatility and day-to-day fluctuations could pose problems for small business owners trying to set prices.

But back in Berlin, which has been branded the "Bitcoin capital of the world," such warnings seem behind the times.

Netherlands native Florentina Martens opened up Floor's Cafe, a small and cozy coffee shop in Kreuzberg, this spring. Only a month later, she decided to offer Bitcoin as an alternative means of payment.

"The currency just fits the lifestyle here -- progressive, modern and often anti-establishment," said Martens, who has been living in Germany for four years.

Martens, 26, has not earned vast amounts of bitcoins yet.

"After all, I am selling cups of coffee," she added.

But her customers are getting more and more interested in the virtual money. "Many of the tourists that come to Kreuzberg, people from outside the community, applaud that they can pay with bitcoins here."

"Someday, I might exchange my bitcoins, but for now, I just use them for buying a burger around the corner," she said.

The former Pussycat Dolls singer has been living in the UK capital for the past few years for her career and now she doesn't think she'll ever go back to the US.

One of the things that has helped the city capture her heart for good is her relationship with model Max Rogers.

The Missouri-native told BANG Showbiz: ''I've been here a while now. And out of anywhere in the world I feel the most at home when I'm here.

''I love the people, the culture, I love that you can walk to the stores. I love the little villages, the good food ... and my beautiful man of course!''

The 'Got To Dance' judge met Max while she was a special guest at the Clothes Show Live in 2011 and their relationship has gone from strength to strength.

Kimberly said: ''We were doing Clothes Show Live together, he was the main model and I was the special guest.

''Nothing really happened at that point but about a month and a half later we were at the wrap party and started having a conversation ... and haven't stopped since.''
